Metronidazole and Dextrose Injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic intravenous solution indicated for the treatment of anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections. It is used in conditions such as intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, septicemia, and infections of the central nervous system. The added dextrose provides fluid and caloric supplementation, making it suitable for patients requiring nutritional support alongside antimicrobial therapy.
Metronidazole enters microbial cells and undergoes reduction by intracellular transport proteins to form reactive nitro radicals. These radicals disrupt DNA structure and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, leading to cell death. Simultaneously, Dextrose is metabolized into ATP, providing cellular energy and helping maintain fluid and glucose homeostasis during infection and treatment.
