Metronidazole (5 mg/ml) and Dextrose (50 mg/ml) Injection IH

Metronidazole (5 mg/ml) and Dextrose (50 mg/ml) Injection IH

Therapeutic Use:

Metronidazole and Dextrose Injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic intravenous solution indicated for the treatment of anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections. It is used in conditions such as intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, septicemia, and infections of the central nervous system. The added dextrose provides fluid and caloric supplementation, making it suitable for patients requiring nutritional support alongside antimicrobial therapy.

Mechanism of Action:

Metronidazole enters microbial cells and undergoes reduction by intracellular transport proteins to form reactive nitro radicals. These radicals disrupt DNA structure and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, leading to cell death. Simultaneously, Dextrose is metabolized into ATP, providing cellular energy and helping maintain fluid and glucose homeostasis during infection and treatment.

Key Benefits:

  • ✔ Provides broad-spectrum anaerobic and antiprotozoal coverage.
  • ✔ Effective in treating infections caused by Bacteroides, Clostridium, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Entamoeba histolytica.
  • ✔ Offers dual benefit of antimicrobial treatment and energy supplementation.
  • ✔ Reduces hospital stay by enabling early IV therapy in serious infections.
  • ✔ Useful in surgical prophylaxis for anaerobic contamination risk.
