Moxifloxacin 0.16% w/v is a sterile, ready-to-use intravenous antibiotic solution belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. It is primarily used to treat bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and intra-abdominal infections. Moxifloxacin IV is indicated when oral administration is not feasible or effective, especially in hospitalized or critically ill patients.
Moxifloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes required for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This inhibition leads to disruption of bacterial cell division and ultimately causes cell death. It has a broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, as well as atypical organisms.
